Stressors, Level of Stress and Coping Mechanism Adopted by Undergradute Nursing Students

Abstract

Stress is fact of life that every human deals with on a daily basis. Stress has long been regarded as a common part of the graduate school experience, comparing with medical, law, psychology, and chemistry graduate students. The stressors include struggling to meet academic standards, time and money management, worries, and concern over grades and relationship with senior students, faculty, and family members. Coping with stress is the recognition of what aspects of life are contributing to excessive stress. Knowledge about stressors can help in coping and thus reduces the severity of stress reactions.1

to assess the stressors & assess the stress level, assess the coping mechanism adopted by undergradute nursing students.

out of total 323 B Sc Nursing students, 44.6% were at the age group of 20–21, 87.3% of students were females, 85.4% were belongs to religion of Christian, 72.8% Of students were living in Hostel, 96.9 were unmarried, 83.9% 0f students were from the Nuclear family. This study illustrate that 65.6% students were having moderate stress and 18.6% students mild and 15.8% students severe stress. In all four year of BSc nursing there were 46% stressors from the curriculum, about 28% stressors are because of Infrastructure, 20% of stressors due to clinical postings, 25% were from teaching faculty, Communication, Support system. The way students cope with stress were by different methods like 50% students had positive thinking, 37% werefrom emotional support, 65% are having social support, 25% uses spiritual support, 30% students were reducing their stress by divertional activity. Only 13.6% had good coping ability & 70.9% students had moderate 15.5% are having poor coping methods.
