Abstract

The present study aimed to determine if there were differences in the effects of two- teaching learning strategies participatory learning activity and Lecture method on the outcome of nursing student performance.

An evaluative approach with Quasi experimental non-equivalent two group pre-test post-test design was adopted with the sample of 500 first year nursing students selected by convenient sampling technique studying in different nursing institutions.

Effectiveness of teaching methods in two groups was done by comparing the difference in mean pre test and post test knowledge score. The calculated‘t’ value in PLA Method (t=43.41) and lecture method (t=43.03) is greater than the table value (t249=1.96) at 0.001 level of significance. Effectiveness of two teaching methods was done by comparing the difference in mean effectiveness of post test knowledge scores of two groups. The calculated't’ value (t=0.480) is lesser than the table value (t498=1.96) at 0.001 level of significance.

The study results show that PLA and Lecture methods are equally effective teaching methods. The teacher can incorporate both the teaching methods.
