A quasi experimental study was conducted to know the effectiveness of use of Birthing ball on the first and second stage labour outcome among primigravidae in a selected hospital at Mangalore from 11th Nov to 14th Dec 2013.
The aim of the study was to compare the first and second stage labour outcome between primigravidae Using and Not Using Birthing ball and to identify the Satisfaction level of primigravidae on the use of Birthing ball.
A quasi experimental research design was used to find the effect of Birthing Ball on first and second stage of labour. The 40 primigravidae (20 each in Using and Not Using Birthing ball), were recruited for the study using purposive sampling technique. The data was collected using Partograph, Observation checklist and Checklist on satisfaction level. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used for the analysis of the data.
The Mean duration (hours) of first and second stage of labour among the primigravidae Using Birthing ball (6.4 Hours) was significantly lower than the primigavidae Not Using Birthing ball (9.2 Hours). Majority of primigravidae Using Birthing ball had normal vaginal delivery (17,85%) and none of them had instrumental delivery. Maximum Primigravidae were highly satisfied (85%) after the use of Birthing Ball.
Birthing ball is effective in decreasing the duration of labour among primigravidae and also most of them have undergone normal vaginal delivery.
