Every year, pregnancy complications cause death of more than half a million women worldwide causing disability in 120 million women. It is estimated that annually 80 million women all over the world have unintended pregnancy among whom 45 million would end up in abortion. Despite the fact that contraceptive usage has increased over a period of time, there exists a Knowledge, Attitude and Practice -gap regarding contraception.
To assess the knowledge regarding use of contraceptive methods among Ante Natal women attending ANC OPD in a tertiary care hospital.
To assess the attitude regarding use of contraceptive methods among Ante Natal women attending ANC OPD in a tertiary care hospital.
A cross sectional study using purposive sampling technique was conducted among 50 antenatal cases attending ANC OPD in a tertiary care hospital of Pune in Mar 2015. Semi structured questionnaire covering three domains including socio demographic status knowledge and attitude regarding contraceptive methods. Knowledge was scored into categories like poor, fair, good and excellent and attitude level was scored into poor, average and good.
Majority of the subjects were within the age group of 26 to30 years. Study revealed that 51% had awareness about methods of contraception. 37.4% had awareness about right time for adopting contraceptive methods. 42% had Myths followed in adopting contraceptive methods. 90%(45) have good attitude, 6%(3) have poor attitude and 4%(2) have average attitude towards need for contraception. 36% (19) have average attitude,34%(17) have poor attitude and 28%(14) have good attitude towards barriers in adopting contraceptive methods. 82%(41) have good attitude, 10%(5) have average attitude and 8%(4) have poor attitude towards society in adopting contraceptive methods. 58%(29) have good attitude, 40%(20) have average attitude and 2%(1) have poor attitude of family towards adopting contraceptive methods.
