The perception of nursing profession is an important factor in attracting the students to the study of nursing. The study aimed to describe nursing students’ perceptions of the nursing profession and their motivators to choose it as a career of choice at the College of Health Sciences in Bahrain.
A descriptive cross-sectional design was used, with a convenience sample of 100 undergraduate first year nursing students were included in the study. The data was collected through self-administered questionnaire.
The study demonstrated generally high agreement among newly accepted nursing students upon the positive aspects of nursing image, as well as the reasons why nursing would be a career of choice. The findings reflect an overall positive attitude among these students towards the nursing profession.
The newly enrolled nursing students in Bahrain have a positive image of the nursing profession as a future career. The major motivators are the parents, and the internet websites, particularly for female ones. More efforts are needed to elucidate the areas of ambiguities in this profession such as the feminine stereotype and the comparison with the medical profession.
