Effectiveness of Structured Teaching Program on Breast Self Examination (BSE) among Postgraduate Students at Selected Colleges of Bangalore, Karnataka

Women are becoming more and more aware of all the fields, as a result of modern education, electronic, print media and health agencies. The incidence rate of Breast cancer and Breast disorders are increasing worldwide⁸. The best method for the early detection of Breast cancer is Breast Self Examination. As the young graduates act as a vehicle for the transmission of information, nurses being high quality care provider can educate the post graduate students for early detection of breast cancer with the help of Breast Self Examination.

The main objective of the study was to assess the Effectiveness of Structured Teaching Program on Breast Self Examination (BSE) among postgraduate students

True experimental design with experimental and control group was adapted. In this present study the sample consist of 80 Post Graduate students with 40 students in Experimental Group from Bangalore University College and 40 students in Control Group from R C College in the age group of 21 to 29 years. Stratified random sampling method was used to select the samples of this study. A self administered structured knowledge questionnaire was used to assess the level of knowledge.

The study revealed that the Experimental Group majority 34 (85.0%) of them had inadequate knowledge (< 50%) and 6(15.0%) of them had moderate knowledge (50%-75%) in Pretest. In Posttest 11 (27.5%) of them had moderate knowledge (50%-75%) and majority 29 (72.5%) of post graduate students had adequate knowledge (>75%) and none of them had inadequate knowledge in Posttest.

STP on BSE was effective in enhancing the knowledge of post graduate students regarding BSE. It is not a cost-effective procedure, which can be used by the individuals themselves.
