Basic life support (BLS) is an emergency procedure performed in Cardiopulmonary arrest (CPA) to manually preserve intact brain function by restoring spontaneous blood circulation & breathing.
Were assessment and comparison of effectiveness of mannequin demonstration (MD) versus video teaching programme (VTP) on BLS for increasing the knowledge and skill in the family members of adult patient at high risk of CPA.
Data collected from October 2014 to February 2015 from 120 adult subjects of both groups before, immediately and one month after the administration of a self administered knowledge questionnaire & observational checklist with two groups pretest, post test randomized experimental design using convenient sampling. Settings were Cardiology's OPD, wards, CCU, Cardiothoracic and vascular surgery ICUs, Medicine's OPD, wards and ICU of AIIMS New Delhi.
There was a statistically significant increase in the total mean knowledge & skill scores of VTP group with p< 0.001,p=0.01 respectively, significant increase in the total mean knowledge(p=0.001) & but no statistically significant increase in the skill scores of the MD group(p=0.89). There was neither statistically significant difference in the total mean knowledge scores between both the groups in pretests(p=0.47),post tests1(p=0.53) and post tests 2(p=0.09) nor in the total mean skill scores of VTP (p=0.98) & MD group (p=0.15) found.
The VTP and MD on BLS were equally effective in improving the knowledge and skills of family members of adult patients at high risk of CPA.
