This research explored antibiotics self-medication among patients resistant to antibiotics in selected medical universities of Tehran. The primary objective of the study was to explore self-medication with antibiotics among patients resistant to antibiotics in selected medical universities of Tehran. In the current study, a stratified sampling methodology was employed to select the in-patients in Shariati, Sina, and Khomeini hospitals, who were resistant to antibiotics. A questionnaire was designed accordingly to answer the main questions. The questionnaires were filled out by 100 patients in the mentioned hospitals. Finally SPSS/17 software statistical analyzer was mainly used as the major software to analyze the data. Findings showed that 51% of the surveyed patients used antibiotics in last three months, among which 31.4% of all patients self-medicated. 32% of the specimens were reported free of cultivation of antibiotics, and in 74.2% of the cases, there was no correlation between prescribed antibiotics and the results of the antibiotic resistance. The highest prescribed antibiotics before any resistance report were 17.87%, while the percentage was 19.7% after the report. Findings of the study reveal that there might be some preventive strategies for antibiotics resistance including educational programs in order to enhance appropriate use of antibiotics, and some medical protocols might be devised.
