Abstract

This paper reviews the composition, properties, biocompatibility, and lts involving the use of mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) materials in dental practice. A Medline searc The first publication on the material was in November 1993. The Medline search identified va ovember 1993 to febrary 2010 {search terms: MTA, GMTA, WMTA, mineral AND trioxide AND abstracts were read to identify which fitted in the categories required for this review. MTA materia land cement parent compound and have been demonstrated to be biocompatible repair materials, lure strongly suggested by its ability to form hydroxyappatite when exposed to physiologic solution d human studies, MTA materials have been shown to have excellent potential as pulp-capping and p.ents but studies with long-term follow-up are limited. Preliminary studies suggested MTA a favorable mate: apical and furcation restorative materials as well as medicaments for pulp capping, apexogenesis and apexi.tion treatments; however, long-term clinical studies are needed in these areas.
