As stem cells are akin to “nature's blank slate”, capable of developing into any of more than 200 cell types that make human body, stem cells can be used to replace the old worn out cells in the human body and ultimately provide a “miracle cure” for a variety of afflictions. Stem cell therapy has been used to treat diseases including Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases, spinal cord injury, stroke, bums, heart diseases, diabetes, osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis. Stem cells are found in dental pulp, periodontal ligament, and alveolar bone marrow. Because of their potential in medical therapy, stem cells are being used to regenerate lost or damage teeth and periodontal structures. The introduction of stem cell-based therapies means that more teeth may be saved, which could reduce dramatically the numbers of patients who must wear dentures or care for their artificial tooth implants. This progress will improve the quality of life for millions of ordinary people.
