Autoimmune thyroid disorders are characterized by presence of antithyroid antibodies, specifically Antithyroglobulin (Tg-ab), Antithyroid peroxidase (TPO-ab) and TSH receptor antibodies. Anti-TPO antibodies are the most common anti-thyroid autoantibody Anti-TPO antibodies are present in 99% of cases where thyroglobulin antibodies are present, however only 35% of anti-TPO antibody positive cases also demonstrate thyroglobulin antibodies.
Three ml of venous blood was collected and serum was separated and stored in deep freezer. Thyroid autoantibodies levels were measured by ELISA method.
In group I; the mean anti-thyroperoxidase (TPO) levels were 0.14 ± 0.5 IU/mL and anti-thyroglobulin (TG) levels 0.06 ± 0.24 IU/mL. In group II; the mean anti- thyroperoxidase (TPO) levels were 0.06 ± 0.24 IU/mL and anti-thyroglobulin (TG) levels 0.03 ± 0.17 IU/mL.
There were no statistically significant relationship found in between group I and group II in relation to pregnancy induced hypertension and thyroid antibodies levels. (p > 0.05).
