Obesity is a commonly encountered health problem in the young adult population of today. The aim of our study was to determine the effect of obesity on cardiovascular reactivity to acute stress in young adults.
This study was done on 60 subjects divided into two groups. The subjects were aged between 18–22 years and were classified into two groups based on their body mass index (BMI): Group 1: BMI: 18–22.9 and Group 2: BMI>23. The cardiovascular reactivity was assessed by measuring the percentage rise in pulse rate and blood pressure following an isometric hand-grip test.
A significant rise in pulse rate and blood pressure was seen following the hand-grip test. Its level of significance being higher in group 1 compared to group 2.
The results of our study suggest a blunted cardiovascular response to acute stress in the obese compared to the non-obese.
