Serum iron in obese and non-obese children

Abstract

The study is aimed to investigate serum Iron levels in obese children

To establish if there is any influence of obesity on serum iron levels in children

20 children between the age group 7–12 years of both the genders whose BMI was equal to or greater than 95th percentile were classified as obese based on the 2000 CDC Growth Charts7. 5ml of venous blood was collected under aseptic conditions and serum iron assessed using the quantitative colorimetric determination of iron and compared with serum iron levels of non-obese children of the same age group.

Statistical analysis was done using unpaired t test and there was a significant decrease in serum Iron levels in obese children when compared to non-obese children.

Serum iron is lower in obese children and they are at risk of developing iron deficiency anemia.
