Comparative effect of kapalbhati and bhastrlka on selected physiological variables

Abstract

Pranayama is a yogic exercise in respiration. However, there exists controversy in accepting yoga as medicine and therapy because it has generally been believed that yoga is. a spiritual science having emancipation as its goals and hence cannot be treated only as a therapy. Thirty female students were selected randomly from, a.p. E. II yearof Lakshmibai National Institute of Physical Education Gwalior. The age group was from 19–22 years. Further three groups i.e. two experimental groups and one control group (each of 10 students) were randomly selected from the selected subjects. Eight Physiological variables Le., Resting pulse rate, Vital capacity ’, Peak flow rate, Resting respiratory rate, Positive Breath Holding time, Negative breathe holding time, Systolic blood pressure and Diastolic blood pressure were selected for the study. In order to study the comparative effect of Kapalbhati and Bhastrika on selected physiology variables, analysis ofcovariance and Post hoc test were applied at 0.05 level of significance. Significant differences were there between Bhastrika Group and control group and Kapalbhati Group and control group case of vital capacity, peak flow rate, breath holding time and on systolic and diastolic blood pressure whereas no significant difference in case of resting pulse rate and resting respiratory rate.
