Abstract

The present study aimed at comparing the body potassium level and resting metabolic rate during follicular and luteal phases. The study was conducted on LNIPE, Gwalior girls (N=20, mean and SD of age respectively 20±2 as the scores were normally distributed). The data were collected on early follicular phase (3–5 days of menstruation) and luteal phase (22–24 days of menstruation) of the subjects. The total body potassium calcium level, resting metabolic rate, and blood pressure were measured by bioelectric impedance method and sphygmomanometer respectively during mentioned phases of menstruation. The tests were administered after 8 hours ofcomplete rest. Paired t-test was employed as statistical analysis to compare the mean at 5% level of significance. Finally, significant difference was shown in body potassium, calcium and systolic blood pressure. Body potassium was higher in follicular phase (104.80±J1.04) than luteal phase (99. 96±9.91}. Body potassium also higher infollicular phase (1183.06±111.42) than luteal phase (1000. 01±l15.02) and diastolic blood pressure was higher in follicular phase (74.00±4.96) than luteal phase (68.00±6.82). No significant differences were found in systolic blood pressure and resting metabolic rate (1466±146) and (1464±149) foliicular and luteal phase respectively. Thus, it could be concluded that total body potassium level is higher in follicular phase than the luteal phase due to the higher level of estrogens secretion causes hypercalcimia, vasodilatation at the age 18–21 years of female players which may affect the sports performance.
