To synthesize and analyse the available scientific evidence on the health effects of a combined intervention consisting of an Ayurvedic-inspired polyphenolic diet and Yoga physical exercise, focusing on their potential synergistic effect.
A systematic literature search was conducted using electronic databases (PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane Library, Google Scholar, and AYUSH Research Portal) for studies published up to May 2024. Search terms included: ("Ayurvedic diet" OR "polyphenolrich diet" OR "Indian diet" OR "spices" OR "turmeric" OR "ginger") AND ("Yoga" OR "yoga exercise" OR "asana" OR "pranayama") AND ("oxidative stress" OR "inflammation" OR "metabolic syndrome" OR "mental health" OR "quality of life"). A qualitative synthesis was performed due to the heterogeneity of interventions and outcomes.
The combined intervention demonstrates significant, synergistic improvements across multiple health domains. Key findings include enhanced metabolic control (e.g., HbA1c, LDL, BMI), significant reduction in oxidative stress (MDA) and inflammatory biomarkers (CRP, TNF-α), and substantial improvements in mental health outcomes (stress, anxiety, quality of life). These effects are consistently greater than those observed in control groups or single-modality interventions.
The combination of an Ayurvedic polyphenolic diet and Yoga exercise produces synergistic health benefits, likely through complementary mechanisms targeting redox balance, metabolic regulation, and neuroendocrine-immune function. More randomized controlled trials (RCTs) specifically designed to test this combination are warranted.
