Abstract

Today it has been widely accepted by the experts that top performance in sports is achieved if an athlete possesses the basic anthropometric characteristics suitable for the event. There are numerous factors which are responsible for the performance of a sportsman. The physique and body composition, including the size shape and form are known to play a significant role in this regard. At present sports man for superior performance in any sports is selected on the basis of physical structure and body size. Ninety University women athletes who participate in the intercollegiate athletic meet in sprint, middle distance and long distance runners were chosen as subjects. The subjects were selected at random. They were divided in to three groups each group consist of 30 subjects. Group I was sprint group (100mts and 200mts), Group II was middle distance runners (800mts, 1500mts) and Group III was long distance runners (1500mts, 10000mts). The ages of the subjects were between 18 to 22years. ANOVA a technique was employed separately for all variables. When the ‘F’ ratio was found significant Scheffe's post hoc test was employed to find out the difference between paired means. The following conclusions have been drawn. Sprinters are better in height than middle distance and long distance runners, Middle distance is found better in weight than long distance runners and sprinters. Sprinters are better in leg length than middle distance and long distance runners. Long distance runners are better in Anxiety than sprinters and middle distance runners. Sprinters and middle distance runners are better in achievement motivation than long distance runners. Sprinters are better in self-Confidence than middle distance and long distance runners.
