Variety Research Information System (VRIS) specifically addresses the management need by producing a user-friendly, menu driven system that generates data collection forms, queries and reports and maintains a cumulative database for statistical analysis and interpretations. The present VRIS for pulse crops viz., chickpea, pigeonpea, mungbean, urdbean, lentil, lathyrus, fieldpea and rajmash was developed during 2001–2002 at the Indian Institute of Pulses Research, Kanpur, India. It accommodates data on various characteristics of varieties using six tables for structure data entry. The software was developed using a numbers of forms/sub-forms that were designed in MS-ACCESS 2000 and operates on Windows 98/Windows NT Workstation 4.0. VRIS helps in interactive retrieval and updating of the data. Details of record, query and report can be accessed through variety name as primary key. VRIS has information on more than 435 varieties of pluses released from 1949–50 to 2001–2002. The database provides safe data storage that can be secured and shared over local Area Network (LAN) at Institute level and liking with the Institute's website (hup://www.iipr.emet.in/vris.htm) for access by pulse growers and other industry members.
VRIS is simple to use and does not require programming knowledge. This Information System directly and specifically addresses the needs for comprehensive information on varieties of pulse crops available for cultivation in different agro-c1imatic zone of the country.
