Studies on Variability, Heritability and Genetic Advance for Fruit Yield and its Component Traits in Early Segregating Generation in Bhendi [(Abelmoschus esculentus (L.) Moench]

An experiment was undertaken to study phenotypic and genotypic coefficients of variation, heritability and genetic advance in three double crosses and four single crosses F₂ population of okra. The analysis of variance revealed highly significant differences for the populations under study for the characters. The estimate of phenotypic and genotypic coefficients of variation were moderate to high for all the characters except days to first flowering, stem diameter (in double cross), fruit length and 100 seed weight. Heritability and genetic advance were also high for all the characters indicating the involvement of additive type of gene action in controlling these characters, hence, selection could be effective.
