Abstract

Plant genetic resources for quality components are most vital for orienting the breeding programme for developing superior end product quality wheat cultivars. Majority of superior quality wheat genotypes are in non-adaptive background. VL 858 (IC 546940), developed through selection from a cross OPATA/RAYON//KAUZ has excellent chapati quality. VL 852 (IC 565011), developed through pedigree method of selection from a winter x spring wheat cross Al Frog#4/HD 30//CPAN 3031 has excellent chapati quality. VL 876 (IC 565010), developed through pedigree method of selection from a winter x spring wheat cross SPINEBILL ‘S’/CPAN 2045 has high bread loaf volume (581 ml), good quality ratio of bread loaf volume (ml)/dough weight (g) and very good bread quality. These genetic stocks are in well adapted background. To safe guard these national resources with respect to Intellectual Property Rights these genetic stocks were registered with NBPGR, New Delhi. Diversification of germplasm using these genetic stocks by involving them in hybridization would prove useful in improving quality components in wheat improvement programme.
