One hundred and twenty genotypes of aromatic rice collected from diverse geographical sources were evaluated in replicated plots under transplanted conditions during Kharif 1990 for agronomic and quality traits. Most of the aromatic rices originating in the Indian sub-continent were good donors for quality components but poor agronomic types. On the other hand, collections from Philippines China, Indonesia and Thailand were good donors for agronomic traits. Few donors for biotic stresses were a1so identified. The promising donors are being exploited in basmati breeding programmes.
