The long term use of antiepileptic drugs therapy shows adverse effect on endocrinal system, specially thyroid functions in epileptic patients. One hundred and twenty epileptic patients who had been on various antiepileptic drugs therapy were selected for the study of their thyroid hormones. The study found a significant decreased serum levels thyroid hormones T3, T4 in patients receiving antiepileptic drugs and it is also observed bitherapy altered more then single drug therapy. The results indicated that the long term use of antiepileptic therapy significantly decreased thyroid hormone level and causes subclinical hypothyroidism and it increase with duntion of therapy. It is suggested thyroid function should be regularly monitored in patients undergoing such treatment.
