Hearing is a sense that enables man to establish contact with his fellows via speech to experience life more fully. The present study was conducted to compare tympanoplasty with temporalis fascia and tragal perichondrium.
The present study was conducted on 56 patients of chronic suppurative Otitis Media. Patients were divided into 2 groups. In group I, 28 patients were subjected to tympanoplasty with temporalis fascia while the in group II, 28 patients underwent with tragal perichondrium. In all patients, otomicroscopy was performed. Pure tone audiometry was done as per American speech and hearing association (ASHA).
In group I, 28 patients were subjected to tympanoplasty with temporalis fascia while the in group II, 28 patients underwent with tragal perichondrium. 18 patients in group I and 17 in group II had <20 dB air bone gap, 10 in group I and 11 in group II had 21–40 dB air bone gap. The difference was non-significant (P> 0.05). 22 patients in group I and 20 in group II had <20 dB air bone gap, 6 in group I and 8 in group II had 21–40 dB air bone gap. The difference was non-significant (P> 0.05).
Both temporalis fascia and tragal perichondrium are excellent graft materials for closure of perforation of tympanic membrane and hearing improvement.
