To evaluate the thyroid hormone status in a group of sufertile Iraqi women in comparison with fertile women of comparable age. The present case control study included 50 infertile Iraqi women serving as study group and 30 fertile women of comparable age serving as control group. The study has been carried out in Al-Diwanioyah maternity and child teaching hospital in Al-Diwaniyah province in the Mid-Euphrates region of Iraq. Venous blood sample was obtained from each woman in order to assess T3, T4 and TSH hormonal levels. Hormonal assay was done using Mini-Vidas Immunofluorescence Hormonal assay machine, at the central Biochemistry lab, AL-Diwaniyah Teaching hospital. Taking the reference range of both serum T3 and serum T4, no women, whether in the control group or in the study group, had a value neither higher nor lower than normal, that is all subjects were within normal reference ranges. On the other hand, mean serum TSH was significantly higher in infertile women in comparison with control group, 3.04 ± 1.39 versus 2.52 ± 1.08 mIU/L (P = 0.027), and that significant proportion of infertile women had higher than normal TSH serum level, 7 out of 50 (14.0%).
