Effect of Structured Therapeutic Exercises Protocol on Physical Functional Status in Women with Varying BMI

Abstract

To find the effect of exercises on strength, endurance, flexibility and quality of life in women with varying BMI.

The study was conducted at physiotherapy department at Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences Karad. A total 62 participants were includes and divided into 4 groups according to their BMI (underweight (15), normal weight (15), overweight (17) and obese class I (15)). All groups were given same strengthening exercises and stretching for upper and lower limb.

Statistical analysis was done by parametric repeated measures ANOVA test. p values for Bench press, Leg press, YMCA-Step test, Sit and reach test and SF-36 were calculated. While comparing the post exercises values, the result revealed that in all the 4 groups there was significant improvement in strength, flexibility and quality of life with p vale <0.0001 respectively. But for endurance there was significant difference seen in group B with p value < 0.0147 and group C with p value <0.0001.

The study concluded that strengthening and stretching exercises has showed effect in all 4 groups but more marked in group C.
