Neck pain is the second most prevalent musculoskeletal symptom but is not given its due importance and is being assessed mostly with other musculoskeletal symptoms. The purpose of the current study was to develop a questionnaire for assessing factors associated with increased incidence and prevalence of non-specific neck pain.
A questionnaire for evaluation of risk factors associated with Non-Specific Neck Pain” (QERNP), has fifty-nine items designed by a detailed literature review and comprehensive collaboration with two academicians and neck pain participants. The questionnaire was tested on 200 participants. The two sections of the questionnaire assess the demographic characteristics, previous relevant history and four domains of the hypothesised risk factors, being occupation, personal electronic device usage, physical activity/inactivity, sleep and stress. Further additional questions are regarding presence and influence of neck pain on the individual. The psychometric properties were analysed by establishing validity and reliability through Principal Component Analysis with varimax rotation, calculation of Cronbach's alpha and item-total correlations.
Twelve factors came into existence explaining 30–40% of the total variance. Lack of redundancy of items and reliability was provided by calculation of Cronbach's alpha and cross validation.
QERNP has satisfactory validity and reliability and is capable of being used in documenting the risk factors associated with neck pain.
