Indonesia is a developing country with a high prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM). Lifestyle behaviours related to type 2 DM cases and studies about its risk factors in Indonesia remain limited. This study aimed to identify the risk factors of type 2 DM in South Sulawesi.
A cross-sectional study was conducted amongst patients undergoing treatment at a centre hospital in south Sulawesi from 2014 to 2016. Data were extracted from medical records. A logistic regression was used to identify the risk factors of type 2 DM.
A total of 1500 patients were included in the analysis. A total of 288 (19.2%) participants had type 2 DM. In the multivariate analysis, we identified exercise (OR 1.84; 95% CI 1.23–2.77; p=0.0030), stress (OR 2.27; 95% CI 1.44–3.57; p=0.0010), total cholesterol level (OR 2.53; 95%CI 1.80–3.56; p=0.0001), hypertension (OR 1.58; 95%CI 1.18–2.14; p=0.0020), education level (OR 0.66; 95%CI 0.51–0.87;
The prevalence of type 2 DM in South Sulawesi remains high. Exercise, stress, cholesterol level, hypertension, education level and age were factors that significantly increased the risk of type 2 DM. Health behaviours and knowledge are recommended to prevent the risk of type 2 DM.
