Abstract

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) involves utilization of a photoactive dye(photosensitizer), which gets activated upon irradiation of light to aspecific wavelength in the presence of oxygen leading to the generation of free radicals, which eventually destroys the targeted cell. Applications of PDT in dentistry are growing rapidly: the treatment oforal cancer, bacterial and fungal infection therapies, andthe photodynamic diagnosis (PDD) of the malignanttransformation of oral lesions. PDT has shown good potential inthe treatment of oral leukoplakia, oral lichen planus, andhead and neck cancer. Photodynamic antimicrobialchemotherapy (PACT) has been efficacious in thetreatment of bacterial, fungal, parasitic, and viralinfections.
