Abstract

A study in rural coastal Andhra Pradesh. Objective: - To study the prevalence, epidemiological and anthropometric determinants associated with Type – 2 Diabetes mellitus (DM).

A population-based cross- sectional study.

Out of 204 study subjects, 111 were females and 93 males. The prevalence of type-2 DM, pre diabetes and non diabetes was 9.8%; 10.3%, and 79.9% respectively. Difference between mean fasting blood glucose and mean post- load blood glucose among diabetics and non-diabetics was found to be highly significant. (p < 0.01). The mean differences in systolic as well as diastolic blood pressure (BP) of diabetics and non-diabetics were shown to be statistically significant. The mean difference in body mass index (BMI) and waist hip ratio (WHR) values among diabetics and nondiabetics, diabetics and pre-diabetics were statistically significant.

BMI, level of BP and WHR are significant determinants of Type 2 diabetes in rural population.
