The present study was undertaken to assess the association between the tobacco chewing and alteration in plasma lipid profile.
300 cases of tobacco chewing between the ages of 20–50 years were included in the study and 300 age matched non-tobacco users served as control. Serum lipid profile was determined by enzymatic methods by kits obtained from Sigma-Aldrich.
High density lipoprotein cholesterol was significantly lower in tobacco chewers than the controls. Total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein cholesterol, very low density lipoprotein cholesterol and, triglycerides was significantly higher in tobacco chewers as compared to non-tobacco user control group.
Our findings suggest that tobacco chewing causes significant dyslipidemia in the direction that increases the cardiovascular risk.
TC-Total cholesterol, LDLc- Low density lipoprotein cholesterol, VLDLc- Very low density lipoprotein cholesterol, HDLc- High density lipoprotein-cholesterol, TG-Triglyceride
