Members of the genus Acinetobacter are ubiquitous in the environment. For long, this organism was considered to be non-pathogenic. In recent years, organisms of the genus Acinetobacter have increasingly been associated with hospital infection.
To isolate and identify Acinetobacter species from cases suffering from urinary tract infection. To study the susceptibility of Acinetobacter calcoaceticus to various antibiotics
Study included microscopic examination, Gram stain study, culture and biochemical analysis of urine samples obtained from 200 patients admitted in the hospital, with clinically suspected urinary tract infection.
Acinetobacter was isolated from 5 (2.5%) urine samples from patients with urinary tract infection. Out of five isolates of Acinetobacter calcoaceticus, three were of var boumanni and two were of var lwoffi.
Acinetobacter should be considered an important etiological agent for urinary tract infection. Special effort may be needed for isolation and identification of this organism. But it is worthwhile, considering its ubiquitous distribution, multiple portals of entry and tendency to develop multi-drug resistance.
