Abstract

Low back pain due to lumbar disc herniation is one of the common causes of morbidity in the form of limitation of activity in young adults. Discectomy is considered as gold standard for operative intervention in patients with lumbar disc herniation where conservative management has failed to cure the symptoms. The results of discectomy depends upon various factors such as patient selection, neurological involvement at the time of presentation.

This is a prospective study of 60 patients with lumbar disc herniation who underwent fenestration and discectomy between 2009 to 2012.

The results were evaluated using Japanese Orthopaedic Association (JOA) low back pain score. The post operative results were good in 90% of patients, fair in 6.66% and poor in 3.33% of patients.

Lumbar discectomy by fenestration method without much removal of lamina (standard laminectomy) is an effective surgical procedure in properly selected patients with lumbar disc herniation. The results of our study are comparable with micro discectomy.
