(i) To determine the causes of deaths in perinatal period. (ii) To ascertain the
sociobiological determinants of perinatal mortality.
All perinatal deaths and live births in the one year study period were recorded. in rural and urban field practice areas of Department of Community Medicine, JNMC, Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh (Uar Pradesh) India. The cause of death was ascertained using verbal autopsy procedure.
In the study period, 700 live births and 31 perinatal deaths were recorded. The leading causes of still births were prematurity and complications of the placenta, cord and membranes whereas for early neonatal deaths, the major causes were prematurity including low birth weight and birth asphyxia.
Most of the deaths especially early neonatal deaths are preventable if the issues like promotion of institutional deliveries, strengthening of the referral system, early recognition of danger signs by health workers through training and reporting of deaths is made mandatory and according to the system.
