Abstract

Post-tonsillectomy pain is a major morbidity. Use of topical bupivacaine has been studied to see its efficacy in causing pain relief in this setting.

To evaluate the efficacy of topical bupivacaine application in the tonsillar fossa for post tonsillectomy pain relief

50 adult and paediatric patients posted for tonsillectomy were selected. Their right tonsillar fossa was packed with gauze soaked in 0.5% BUPIVACAINE after removal of the tonsil and their left fossa with saline which acted as control. Post-op analgesia was assessed using VAS score.

Results were analyzed using unpaired t-test

Topical use of bupivacaine caused considerable pain relief, patients were more comfortable on the side where bupivacaine was used.
