Abstract

TB ranks as the second leading cause of death from infectious diseases worldwide Tuberculosis still remains one of the deadliest infectious diseases in the world1. As per world health organization (WHO) estimation, 8 million new cases have been detected and 3 million people die from this disease every year (WHO report 2002)2. Despite several control programs, Tuberculosis continues to be a leading cause of mortality and morbidity in India. As per the current disease rate, every minute one Indian is dying due to TB3. TB is a leading cause of death among people who are HIV positive. Over 11million people are dually infected with TB and HIV worldwide. A thorough understanding of the disease and its etiological agent, the clinical presentation, the epidemiology of TB, the role of various intervention strategies and efficient application of diagnostic tools are important for a successful control of tuberculosis spread4.
