Effect of rest interval on total work, systolic blood pressure and numerical rating scale during 65% 1RM bench press exercise

Abstract

We investigated the total work, systolic blood pressure, and numerical rating scale at 65% bench press according to the differences in rest time between sets in 8 males aged in their 20s.

The subjects of this study included8 healthy males in their 20s, and living in C city. Following signed voluntary agreement, the bench presses of these subjects under three resting time conditions were cross-distributed. The data were verified with repeated measures’ two-way ANOVA and Contrast's repeated method was applied for post-hoc comparison. The significance value was α<.05.

First, the total work decreased significantly as the set progressed. Second, systolic blood pressure did not show any significant difference. Third, in the initial set, the short rest condition(1min) tended to be higher than the long rest condition(3 to 5min), but the tendency was reversed as the set progressed.

As the rest interval between sets increases, the total momentum increases. As the rest interval between sets decreases, the NRS value increases. During the 65% bench press all-out exercise, systolic blood pressure was 181–186 mmHg under all conditions.
