Abstract

This study aimed at investigating the effect of hold relax technique and oral glucosamine on physical symptoms of osteoarthritis such as pain, joint stiffness, and functional limitation, and the change of biomarker cartilage oligomeric matrix protein (COMP).

The study was conducted at the Physio Sakti Clinic and Medisakti Clinic, involving 40 subjects who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Subjects were randomly assigned into two groups, intervention and control group. Intervention group was given hold relax technique and oral glucosamine, and control group was given standard physiotherapy treatment. Both group were treated three times a week for four weeks. Measurements were performed using the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) for pain, joint stiffness and functional limitation, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) methods was used for measuring serum level of COMP at baseline and week 4.

The results showed that there were significant differences (p <0.05; CI = 95%) in terms of WOMAC score (pain, stiffness and functional limitation) and serum level of COMP between the intervention group and control group.

The combination of hold relax technique and glucosamine is more effective on improving osteoarthritis symptoms and biomarker COMP compared to standard physiotherapy.
