Vision 2015 of MCI emphasizes on ‘Competency-based learning’ and insists for assessment of newer learning experiences, competencies, along with certification of essential skills. At present to evaluate the eligibility of intern, the assessment is undertaken by an objective approach using situational tests in knowledge, skills and attitude (Satisfactory completion certification). However, the students are not formally examined for proficiency of their acquired skills and hardly any intern requires repeating the posting for getting fewer score in satisfactory completion certification. Hence to strengthen the assessment modality, especially for assessment of competencies in different disciplines, it is imperative to introduce definite practical measures.
CGPAS model is developed and introduced for assessment of competencies acquired by the interns during the internship, at JN Medical College, DMIMS(DU). As per the model, the evaluation system assesses the skills of intern while performing the minimum number of prescribed subject specific procedures and activities, in addition to monitoring the attendance and judging an intern on five broad parameters of satisfactory completion. After implementation of this model for consecutive three years (2012 to 2014) the grades of the interns were reviewed and perception of the faculty and interns was solicited.
Majority of the interns acquired A+ grade i.e. score from 8.0 to 10 for the MBBS batches of year 2012 and 2013 except the year 2014–15, wherein maximum i.e. 41% interns got grade-A, followed by 34% interns with A+ grade. The interns with the score below 5 (grade-C) ranged from 2.02% to 7.09% across three batches. Feedback analysis depicted that the added criterion of CGPAS grading is comprehensive and has strengthened the process of internship training certification.
CGPAS model developed for assessment of competency based medical internship found to be feasible and acceptable for implementation and has stabilized over a period of time at DMIMS(DU).
