Chronic and intermittent alcoholism affects spatial memory and cause disturbances in daily life activities particularly in earlier ages. Prolonged consumption of alcohol has been reported that leads to cognitive dysfunctions and Alzheimer's like neurodegenerative disorders. Purpose of this study is to determine the beneficial effects of diosmetin on hippocampal neuropathology in rats with ethanol induced cognitive impairment. Alzheimer's like cognitive impairment was induced by 1.75g/kg of ethanol and diosmetin (4mg/kg/mL) was used for drug treated groups. Spatial memory, Acetylcholineesterase (AChE), brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and histopathology of the hippocampus were studied after 21days of ethanol administration. The findings were shown that diosmetin significantly increased the spatial memory and number of pyramidal neurons in the CA1 region. These results suggest that diosmetin can be a beneficial molecule for Alzheimer's like cognitive impairment.
