Nitric oxide levels in chronic renal failure patients and maintenance hemodialysis in comparison to healthy controls

Abstract

Nitric oxide (NO), previously thought of as a noxious gas, is now recognized as an important mediator of vascular responsiveness. Soon after its discovery, it was realized that the actions of NO are similar to the previously described endothelium-derived relaxing factor (EDRF). It is synthesized in the vascular endothelium utilizing the enzyme nitric oxide synthase (NOS) and diffuses in the adjacent vascular media, where it has a vasodilatory action. Opposing actions of NO and vasoconstrictor agents (such as endothelin-1, angiotensin IotaIota, and others) maintain the vascular tone of the renal arteries. The same balance at the level of the macula densa maintains glomerular filtration rate (GFR) during varying levels of salt excretion.

to study the nitric oxide levels in chronic renal failure and maintenance hemodialysis in comparison to healthy controls.

All the study participants were admited in the department of Nephrology at Fathima Institute of Medical Sciences, Kadapa. Andhra Pradesh. India.they were divided into 4 groups Group-I: healthy controls-100. Group-II-CRF Patients-50. Group-III: CRF patients on haemodialysis (Pre HD)-50. Group-IV: CRF patients on haemodialysis (Post HD)-50. The obtained serum samples were used for biochemical analysis for estimating nitric oxide, oxi-LDL and Homocysteine levels.

Our study findings in accordance with previous evidence indicated an increased levels of serum NO and its significant positive correlations with Hyc and Oxi LDL in CRF patients on MHD.
