Effectiveness of an educational program on nurses’ knowledge concerning nursing management for patients with compound fracture at orthopedic wards in medical city directorate

A quasi-experimental design was carried out at orthopedic wards in Medial city directorate from 10/1/2018 to 26/5/2018. The present study aimed at evaluating the effectiveness of an educational program on nurses’ knowledge concerning management of patients with compound fracture. The program and instruments are constructed and developed by the researcher to measure the purpose of the study. Purposive (non probability) was consisted of (44) nurses divided into two groups: study group consisted of (22) nurses exposed to the nursing educational program and the control group consisted of (22) nurses who were not exposed to the program. For measuring the effectiveness of the educational program on nurses’ knowledge the researcher used a knowledge test that included (35) items concerning assessment of nurses’ knowledge related to management of patients with compound fracture. Reliability of instrument tools was determined through the use of test and retest (r=0.85) and the instrument validity which was determined by a panel of (10) experts. The results of the study indicated that the majority of nurses’ age in both the study and control groups was less than 40 years with percentage of (40.9%) in study group and (45.5%) in the control group. This study confirmed that the majority of nurses in orthopedic wards were male with (68.2%) in the control group but equal gender of nurses in the study group with (50%) for both male and female. The present study has revealed the majority of nurses in the study group (50%) and (45.5%) in the control group were nursing school graduated related to educational level and the findings demonstrated that the majority of nurses who work in the orthopedic wards were having less than 5 years employment with percentage (36.4%) in the study group and (36.4%) in the control group.
