Abstract

The physical and psychological well-being of a caregiver is important for the well being of the person receiving care. Disability is highly demanding, requiring consistent care. People with disabilities have constant health needs for very long periods in their life. They may have limitations in the activities of daily living and communication abilities. Apart from health, they have educational, empowerment and livelihood needs.

To study the socio-demographic profile among caregivers of persons with permanent disabilities

A hospital based cross sectional study was carried out during July 2014 to December 2014. 100 caregivers of cases registered under “ Chaitanya Vahini” programme at SVYM hospital were selected by using the formula 4pq/l2. Data was collected by using a pre structured questionnaire by personal interview.

28% of study subjects were in the age group of 26–35 years, 52% were above the age of 36 years. 87% were females, 78% were married, 47% belonged to nuclear type of family, illiterates were 56%, 56% were homemakers, 29% were coolies. 69% of the study subjects belonged to socio-economic class IV according to modified B.G. Prasad's classification.

Socio demographic factors play a very important role which can impact the quality of life of caregivers which in turn can affect the mental and physical health. Social assistance from governmental & nongovernmental organizations is required for both caregivers & care receivers.
