The purpose of this study was designed to find the influences of parenting attitude and parent-teenagers communication on self-esteem of adolescents.
This study applied cross-sectional research design with a structured questionnaire. The subjects were 380 middle school students in Korea. Data were collected after describing the purpose and contents to the students.
Self-esteem was significantly correlated with school record, economic status, communication with parents, parents’ level of education, and perceived atmosphere. The relative influence toward the adolescents’ self-esteem was shown in the order of importance as follows; communication with mother, adolescent’s perceived acceptance area of parenting attitude, school record, adolescent’s perceived autonomy area of parenting attitude, father’s level of education.
From the study, self-esteem appeared to be influenced by multiple factors such as parenting attitude, school record, communication with mother, father’s level of education, and economic status.
