Histological and biochemical changes in mice liver and kidney following chronic exposure to hexavalent chromium

Abstract

Chromium compounds are toxic chemical and carcinogenic material.the effects of different dosage of chromium (Cr) on liver and kidney structural and functional modulation in the Albino mice were is inspected. Eighteen albino mice were divided into four groups of six animals (n= 3/group): group I served as a control, group II administration through intra-peritoneal injection Cr Cl2 at a dose of 5 mg/Kg body weight (BW), group III was treated with 10 mg/Kg BW. Blood samples were collected and estimated for glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT), glutamic pyruvic transaminase (GPT), in the serum. The study revealed that there is a significant elevation in the level of GOT and GPT in serum. The results of the study suggests that chromium (VI), a hepatotoxic chemical may perhaps damage the plasma membrane resulting in leakage of enzymes in to the serum. The creatine and urea concentrations were analyzed. Histopathological studies of kidney and liver show increase in the intensity and incidence of vaccuolation, cellular necrotic and hypertrophy of CrCl2 treated in mice.
