The world was aiming to reduce neonatal deaths by two-thirds of 2015, and most of the less developed countries, including Iraq, were unable to attain this goal. A descriptive analytic study is conducted throughout the period of (October 11th 2017 to June 11th, 2018). It aimed at the identification the causes of neonatal mortality in neonatal care units (NCUs). As well as, to determine the relationship between causes of neonatal mortality and mother’s characteristics. A convenience non-probability sample consists of 1817 subject was collected through a review of nCUS records which were selected out from the main hospitals in babylon province. The data were gathered retrospectively through special questionnaire from the mortality sheets of preterm infants and newborns, death certifications and the program of preterm infants and newborns called (Microsoft Visual FoxPro). Data were analyzed through used the descriptive and inferential analysis. The study results reveal that the (49.1%) of the mothers within the age group (14-24) years old who live in urban area, and there was none significant relationship between mother’s characteristics and death their neonate. The most common causes of neonatal mortality were constituted (46.1%) as a respiratory distress syndrome RDS.
