Effectiveness of structured educational program on nurses’ knowledge concerning therapeutic communication at cardiac care units in Holy Karbala Governorate Hospitals

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of an educational program on nurses’ knowledge concerning therapeutic communication. A quasi experimental design was carried out at Karbala Center for Cardiac Diseases and Surgery, Imam Hussein Medical City and Al-Handia General Hospital for period 10 th June 2017 to the 15 th of August 2018. Purposive sample comprised of (57) nurses were divided into two groups, study group consisted of (32) nurses exposed to the nursing educational program and control group consisted of (25) nurses were not exposed to the program. The measurement of effectiveness of nursing educational program through the use of knowledge test includes (42) items and practice checklist includes (17) items concerning therapeutic communication. Reliability of instrument was determined through the use of test and retest and the instrument validity was determined through a panel of experts. The results of the study showed that the effectiveness of educational program regarding nurses’ knowledge for therapeutic communication is a positive. It also shows that there are highly significant differences in the study group between pre-and posttests in overall main domains related to nurse’s knowledge.
