Reversible Data hiding (RDH) or Reversible steganography is a process of embedding data into covers like audio, video and image files and it can be used for media protection, covert communication, copyright protection and integrity authentication. In this work several RDH algorithms are classified into six categories. They are Expansion based RDH, Histogram Shifting based RDH, Code Division Multiplexing based RDH, Compression based RDH, Contrast enhancement with RDH and RDH in encrypted domain. RDH also referred as loss less or invertible data hiding, which is a method that embeds a message into a host image and then recovers the image with no information loss, whereas extracting the embedded message. Various RDH techniques have been proposed. This paper critically reviews the technical advancement for the past decade on the aspects of pre-processing, feature extraction, analysis technique and classification. The current trend in reversible data hiding is to insert secret data in video by using RDH in the encrypted domain that has a wide selection of application on the confidential communication within the field of cyber security.
