Estimate the prevalence of Depression among patients with Type 2 Diabetes mellitus and to assess the association between glycemic control and depression.
The design adopted for the study was Cross sectional survey. The participants consisted of 240 patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus with at least one year of duration disease, who were on prescribed treatment for Diabetes. The survey was conducted in a semi urban community there were a mix of people in various socio demographic strata. Exclusion criteria were chronic liver disease, chronic renal disease cancer, and severe anemia, people with recent blood loss or blood transfusion and pregnancy. A short depression scale validated in similar population was used for assessing the depression and glycemic control was estimated by glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA1C) level using nepleometry.
The overall prevalence of depression in the study group was 42.13% (101/240).There was a statistically significant association between depression and glycemic status, Chi square 5.183 at 1d(f), P value 0.023.
The study concluded that the group with poor glycemic control are more depressed than the group with good glycemic control.
