Mental illness have been largely ignored or neglected because of a community's perception and attached social stigma. The improvement of community tolerance of people with mental illness is important for their integration. There is a need of health education programme to reduce the chances of mental illness. This study was conducted toassess the effectiveness of video assisted teaching programme on knowledge regarding mental illness among general public of selected area, Jalandhar (Punjab). The objectives of the study were to assess the pretest and post-test knowledge score regarding mental illness, compare the pre-test and post-test knowledge score regarding mental illness and to find out the association between pre and post-test knowledge score regarding mental illness and selected demographic variables.
An experimental research approach and one group pre test and post test is used. The setting is a selected area of Jalandhar. The sample includes 40 people selected by purposive sampling technique. The tool consisted: Part 1 demographic variables and part 2 structured knowledge questionnaire. Reliability of the tool was established by using split half method.
The findings of the study show revealed that pre test mean knowledge score was 14.15 and post test mean knowledge score was found to be 23.92. The tabled value at p 0.05 level of significance at 78df was found out to be 1.645, which was significantly lower than the calculated ‘t ’value (16.84). Hence null hypothesis was rejected and research hypothesis was accepted and concluded that the post-test knowledge score regarding mental illness was significantly higher than pre-test knowledge score. It was safely assumed that video assisted teaching programme was effective in increasing the knowledge of public on mental illness.
