Population ageing is ultimate consequence of demographic transition. due to increased industrialization and modernization and due to the shrinkage of joint family into nuclear family many of elderly find their way to old age homes. Studies indicated that older adults are commonly subjected to depression. Old age consist of ages nearing or surpassing the average lifespan of human beings and thus the end of human life cycle.
Assess the depression among elderly residing in old age homes of Thiruvananthapuram district.
Our present study is to assess the depression among elderly residing in old age homes of Thiruvananthapuram district. The population consisted of elderly people living in te hold age homes. The study is descriptive in nature and using semi-structured questionnaire and geriatric depression rating scale we assessed the depression among 100 elderly.
The findings of our study showed that 13% of our study participants have no depression, 37% have mild depression 50% have severe depression.
